Ireland is a minor island nation in north-west Europe.
The country remained neutral throughout the Second World War, having won independence from the United Kingdom in 1922. Though an independent nation, Ireland remained under British monarchy until it severed all royal ties with the Republic of Ireland Act in 1948.
