Australia was one of the first nations to enter the Second World War after the United Kingdom declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland. Australia contributed troops to the Mediterranean theatre in aid of the United Kingdom (notably important in the Siege of Tobruk), and played a major role in the Pacific theatre, notably participating in battles for Bougainville, Papua New Guinea (The Kokoda Trail), and the Battle of the Coral Sea.
